Just two suggestions for this area:

I'd like to see more options within this area, such as being able to force re-sync of all/selected content without having to go and republish the page/item individually first.

It should also be possible to generate an export/import zip rather than relying on network transfer.

Your request is viable. Therefore I have added it as a feature request in our Feedback Portal. Feel free to tack its progress there as well as vote for it in order to increase its priority. We will do our best to include this functionality in our future releases.
