department deletion results in web crash [4.2.1650]

If at some point a department had products, but it gets deleted (even after the products have been removed from the department prior to deletion) it results in a website crash with the department widget.

In the sf_taxonomy_statistic table some reference to that deleted department remains, causing the widget to try and search for that department. Open SQL and removing the referenced department is the only solution to resolve the problem.

The marked_items_count seem to be updated in the db, however on the backend, in the departments view the "Applied to x items" column remains 0 for all departments.
