deploy from local to server question

I created a sitefinity site/app on my local pc and now I want to deploy it to my server for customer testing. However, we created a Sitefinity project on the server and in that new project I can't upload any of my master pages, controls, etc to it. So for me to deployment my site/app from  my local, do I have to copy all of the required files to the server for it to work correctly on the actual server?

I read that, however, it doesn't answer the question/issue I'm facing.

1. I'm creating master pages, custom widgets (user controls), etc all locally, and when I try to upload them to the site on the server it errors out.

So do we have to upload the entire site folder to the server everytime we make a new usercontrol, master page, etc/

If this is a web application you need to build it locally and upload the bin folder and your controls.
