Up to 256KB generated thumbnail size in SF 4.1

We use the Sitefinity 4.1 generated thumbnails in one of our public controls. The thumbnail images render correctly, however, they appear to be much larger than necessary. It seems that they are also padded with NULL characters (binary zeroes) perfectly to 8K, 16K, 64K,128K and 256K. For example, a 146x146 JPEG image is 128KB (see attached for reference). We have double-checked these results by running everything through Fiddler2 and Firebug.

For reference, the homepage of our clients' website is 2662KB in production mode, of which 36% is Sitefinity thumbnail load (968KB in 11 zero-padded thumbnails (avg. size 88KB), excluding Sitefinity JavaScript payload). The /Sitefinity/Content/Images page currently downloads 9.9MB to the client.

We will cache the images to alleviate the bandwidth requirements, but first-load times will still be longer than necessary. We are not sure if this qualifies as "bug" per se, but we wanted to make you aware of what appears to be an inefficiency.

Hello Pavel,

I've replied you yesterday in the Support thread.
We will investigate this behavior, and will get back to you.

Greetings,
