Edit page breaks after changing template - Sitefinity - Bugs & Issues

It seems after 4.1 there were some updates for orphaned controls. It is my understanding that if you change a template controls either try to go to the first placeholder or go translucent and you're allowed to move them. This is not the case for me. From this end it looks like a javascript error.

Version 4.4 2117

1. Create page and populate with controls
2. Change template
3. Open page
4. UI breaks with javascript error

Since the javascript breaks nothing on the page works. All I can do is back out of the page then the page gets locks. You can see more of the details of the javascript error on the screenshot.

I have a large number of pages to change. Hopefully there is some quick fix for this?
