cannot view users (SF 5/IE 7) - Sitefinity - Bugs & Issues

Hi - we are unable to view any users when we go to Administration/Users in SF 5, only the lists of roles. The browser (IE 7 - unfortunately stuck with it for now) gives the error
'btnCreate' is null or not an object

More information - we recently applied the patch for SF 5.1 - it was working in 5.0. Also get this error message:
Sys.Argument.Exception: Cannot deserialize. The data does not correspond to valid JSON. Parameter name: data

I started getting this error while trying to view the Pages backend. Any body find a solution?

the JS error I receive:

Uncaught Sys.ArgumentException: Sys.ArgumentException: Cannot deserialize. The data does not correspond to valid JSON. Parameter name: data
