Confused about Canonical Implimentation

The current canonical implementation I think is borked...or not implemented properly?

If my page is http://www.site.com/articles
Canonical should be http://www.site.com/articles

If I append a querystring to that page, I'd expect my canonical to still be
http://www.site.com/articles

...not be
www.site.com/articles

As that creates 2 indexable pages...the canonical should be telling google the root page to build rank on right?

Hello Steve,

We're glad to hear a feed back on the feature.
First of all in Sitefinity 6.0 the canonical url links will be added on dynamic pages that are able to show specific type of content (IDataItem) in detail mode. E.g. - if we have a several pages with a news widget - each page that shows the news item in it's detail mode should have a canonical url link - for the news item.

Currently the canonical urls are not supported for static pages yet. We are working on this and hope we will provide it for the planned service pack. And yes - your are absolutely right about the query string parameters in the canonical link - there are ones that should be removed as they do not change the page content (e.g. some referral tracking information) and there are others that should be kept as they (could) be used to output a different content on the page (e.g. paging parameters). And we plan to have a configuration (on page level) for white-listed parameters that will be kept when generating canonical url link.

And the query string parameters are only part of the problem we're trying to solve by placing a canonical link. This will fix casing issues, domain issues etc. E.g.

http://www.SiTe.com/articles
http://SiTe.com/articles
www.site.com/articles

should all have a canonical url link:

http://site.com/articles

If you have some other ideas on that topic - don't hesitate to share them with us.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Do you have an ETA on it by any chance?...we talking service pack?

I mean it's better than NOT having them, but they're so not reliable right now I'm going to be keeping my custom implimentation :/

FYI...if you're in there screwing with them ANYWAY...and we know the real canonical url...could you put in next\prev meta for paged content? :)

Hello Steve,

We are aiming this for the Service Pack.
In fact the canonical links are reliable. No problems have been reported yet. And as I said - they are not complete (there are areas that are not covered yet - we know them and we're working). Soon we will fill in the gaps. But what is delivered is stable and good.

And thanks for the suggestion for pagination with next\prev - we'll try to include it either. It's worth having it!

Kind regards,

I am trying to use the canonical urls feature that is offered with 6.1.  for the events and news widgets. I have followed the directions provided by Telerik and I'm not getting anywhere.

On another note, I am also having trouble with using the DAM Desktop application. I am getting an error saying "Unable to connect. Please be sure you have a connection
to the site and Sitefinity Dam Module is activated”.

I have tried using every type of login.  Made sure the DAM module was activated, even deactivated and reactivated. I also found this forum and followed the directions about the lightening module and the bin folder.

Any suggestions would be very helpful.
