Custom MVC Widget Designer cannot set page title

I have a Custom MVC widget acting as the default location for my custom content type. I understand with the standard designers that I could append the title of the custom item to the title attribute of the page. However I can't find any information on how to include and handle the correct fields in my custom designer. I can of course include new properties into the Controller but I'm not sure if they will automatically hook into the Sitefinity functionality to actually make the changes to the title, Metatags and so forth.
