News Single Item Settings "Selected Existing Item"

Hello,

We are using the News Content Type on a page with the list of news items. To see a single news item we are using the "Selected Existing Item" under "Single Item Settings.

The page structure looks something like:

- Page
- Page
- Page
- Page
- Page (News list)
- Page (News single)
- Page
- Page
- Page
etc.

The tree navigation work properly for every other page. On the Home page it starts closed and then the tree navigation opens if a particular page is selected. 
It doesn't work on the News single item page though. How can I get the Tree navigation to open to the News Single Item Page, when a News List item has been clicked?

The tree navigation resides on the main Page Template.
