Changing the control type of a Default List Field

Anyone know if there is a way to change the type of default fields?

For example List Default fields, when you go to 

Content > Lists > Select an existing List >  Custom fields for list items

I want to change the Description field that is of type short text to a text area control instead of just a text box.

Is this possible?

A possible solution for this is to create one custom field of the type you require and name it myCustomDescription for example. Then use it on the frontend template instead of the built in Description field.
