Document Link

I've added a custom field to my Documents which is an image. (Used for document thumbnails).

Now I was hoping to be able to just use the "Document Link" widget on my page and select a custom widget template designed by the widget template section, but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this. From what I can see the only way I can apply a custom layout to the 'Document Link' widget is with custom user controls.  

Is this correct?

Is there any help with this?
