Can we develop sites for Sitefinity without the Silverlight 4.0 SDK?

I just noticed the following statement in the documentation:

PREREQUISITES: You must have Silverlight 4.0 SDK and Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 installed.

Can we develop Sitefinity sites without Silverlight? Is Silverlight a requirement for visitors of sites based on Sitefinity CMS? How about for users of the Sitefinity CMS?

Thanks!

Silverlight is not required by visitors to your web site (unless of course you've added Silverlight to your web site).

Sitefinity's backend does make some use of Silverlight though.

1.  The Sitefinity Analytics module makes heavy use of Silverlight
2.  The multi-file uploader also uses Silverlight

Out of curiosity, what is the concern?

The concern is Silverlight :-) We can't count on our customers to always have it installed, in some IT environments browser plug-ins like Flash or Silverlight sre not allowed.

Does the multi-file uploader have a fall-back to the normal HTML single-file uploader?

What is still visible in the Analytics module without Silverlight?

Hello,

The Analytics , Images , Videos and Files & Documents use Silverlight. Images , Videos and Files & Documents use Silverlight based upload control and videos are also shown by RadMediaPlayer control for Silverlight. The Silverlight is must for these modules and you will not be able to use theme without having the plugin installed on the client.
