Configuring custom module widgets

I've got a custom module and want to add a content selection view to the widget. I want to be able to select a single content item.

I see here that it's included in custom modules built using the tool available in 4.4 (http://www.sitefinity.com/documentation/user-guide/displaying-content-using-widgets/content-widgets-group/configuring-custom-module-widgets.aspx) but unfortunately i'm still on 4.2.

How, in your opinion, should I proceed?
