Unable to use inherited FormsControl in SiteFinity

Hi,
We have a need to implement notifications on Forms in SiteFinity in the same way as outlined here: http://www.sitefinity.com/blogs/radoslavgeorgiev/posts/11-12-23/how_to_implement_notifications_for_incoming_forms_responses.aspx 

We have implemented a custom FormsControl that is identical to the example one given, yet when we register it in the Advanced Settings the default FormsControl is still being used, even after IIS reset. The configuration appears to be saved yet not used. Is there another way to set this or a way to check why it is not picking up the custom FormsControl?
