Changing the OpenAccess connection pooling defaults in Sitef

Does anyone know how to change the connection pooling options that OpenAccess uses in Sitefinity?  I've tried using the OpenAccessConnection.BackendConfigurationInit event to set what I want for settings, but they seem to revert back to the defaults as Sitefinity continues to start up.

I've also tried using the web.config as talked about here: http://www.telerik.com/help/openaccess-orm/pool-settings.html but that also doesn't seem to work either.

Any ideas?
