Community edition - an option?

Hi!
I develop for a company who have a licence and we are planning on migrating a number of our other sites over to sitefinity in the future however, I would quite like to build a personal site with sitefinity to allow me to build up my knowledge of sitefinity outwith the work enviroment. I was considering installing the community edition on my server but I was wondering, is the community edition kept up to date with developments of the main production version i.e. is Community Edition on 5.1 now?
How well does CE run on shared hosting ? - can't afford a dedicated server just for a development site.
