dropdown Profile Type - external Data

We are using SF 5 as "VB.NET" based on instructions from SF.  working good.  Anyway, when a user reg. we need to display a selection dropdown list ("value","Text") from data coming from external SQL DB. 

I've posted this on SF support but got an answer that didn't really relate this this.  is there a simple way to display a dropdown list from external query that saves the value as a profile field?

I think what you need is a custom Field Control. I'm actually struggling with these controls myself right now, so I can't provide much detail yet, but it's worth to look into.
