Custom Authentication - Sitefinity - Front- & Back-End Development

What are the steps I will need to do custom authentication.
The scenario is that in order to enter a protected section, the user will need to enter either a license key or a username/password.
I am an ASP.Net developer but have limited experience with Sitefinity.
