Cannot find template error - Sitefinity - Front- & Back-End Development

I am trying to create a custom widget using SiteFinity 6.2. I used the "Sitefinity Widget with Desginer" template from Thunder as my starting point. I added the fields and the code to the template and the cs file. When I add the new custom widget to a page, I am getting the error "Cannot find template" and then it has the path from the layoutTemplatePath property.

The path consists of "~/AssemblyName/Namespace.folder.templatename.ascx"
The template is marked as an embedded resource.

Can you not put a custom widget within a folder in a project? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be wrong?
