SSO w/External Login Page - Sitefinity - Front- & Back-End Development

My organization would like to implement single sign on between our Sitefinity site and a separate (external) website that we operate. We would like users to log in via an existing login page in the external website. If they have logged into the external site and navigate to our Sitefinity site, we'd like Sitefinity to automatically log them in.

We have looked at the various Sitefinity SSO documentation pages, but none of the scenarios seem to address our setup. We have discussed various solutions and are looking for suggestions on how to best implement this scenario. Thank you for your help!
