What is the purpose of the Google Analytics module

Does the Google Analytics module do anymore than just show a subset of data which i can already get from the Google Analytics website?

I don't think so (perhaps it works together with the Personalization module, but I don't have that one). The main advantage as I see it is that backend users can see the data in one place along with all the Sitefinity options, so no need to go somewhere else and login twice.
