Web API Support - Sitefinity - Front- & Back-End Development

I would like to use Web API Service Endpoints within my Sitefinity project. I am aware of Sitefinity support for ASP.NET MVC, but what about support for ASP.NET Web API? How do I go about integrating ASP.NET Web API into my Sitefinity Web Application Projects so that I can have my ASP.NET MVC Widgets communicate with my ASP.NET Web API Controllers? How do I leverage the Attribute based routing in Web API 2.2 to ensure my MVC Widgets are able to properly call my Web API Controllers?

Please advise.
