Best way to extend/customize Feather widgets

What is the best approach to customize Feather widgets when you need the designer to be different (i.e. change/add a field)?

For instance, we needed to change the image field to an image library selector field in the designer.  We ended up creating our own MVC widget and re-used the Card designer code to make it happen.  Is this the best approach or is there another cleaner/simpler solution?
