Customize User Search for Admin

I would like to provide the ability to search on custom profile info to find users (like last name or first name). I can build the search as an external module/MVC page, but I would like to link back to the built in user editing that is available from the standard user admin. However it seems like the built in user edit screen is triggered from JavaScript.   Is there any way to link to that screen directly or host the editing control?
