How to customize the "producttype" to manage produ

For a current project we have a requirement that products should be filtered on product type. On the filter widget, there should be a description text that is based on the producttype (we use the eCommerce module).

I cannot find a good way to extend the producttype for the content manager to enter a product type related description. 

Things we already have thought about:

1. Dynamic module: "ProductType Settings" with a reference to a product type and a description field. A big issue here is that the producttype type cannot be selected in a "related data" field. 

2. Could use "labels and messages" but then we should reference the product type with a name conventions which is pretty ugly.  We want to avoid name conventions.

So the question is: What is the best practice for extending the producttype with extra content?
