Want Archive and Categories widgets on same page but filteri

I currently have both the Archive and Categories widgets on the same page and they filter the Blog Posts widget which is also on the same page (I attached a screenshot). The Archive and Categories links work fine except that if I click on an Archive link and then on a Categories link, both filters are in place at the same time. For example, if I click on an Archive "December" link and then on "Some Category" link, I will only see December blog posts within Some Category. Instead, I want the Archive filter to be cleared when the Categories link is clicked and vice versa.

I found this blog post from 2013 which provides a solution to this problem: www.sitefinity.com/.../removing-appended-query-strings-when-using-archive-and-categories-widget-in-sitefinity-cms. I haven't tried it yet. Is this still the recommended solution to my problem?

I'm on Sitefinity 8.2.5900.0.
