predefined content areas

Hi,

I have previously had advice from support on creating predefined content areas for Templates and was directed to this KB article for 3.x

www.sitefinity.com/.../how-to-create-predefined-template-pages-that-contain-controls-placed-on-the-content-areas.aspx

I believe this is now supported in version 4, can you please let me know how this is doen?

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris Warner,

There is no implementation for predefined areas in CTP 4.0. In 4.0 you could add controls to a given ContentPlaceHolder on a page level no matter that you have already added some controls to the same ContentPlaceHolder on template level. This allows you do drop/declare the controls in your template and keep using the same CotnentPlaceHolders when you work with pages. In 3.x this was not possible - once you add a control in the template the whole ContentPlaceHolder becomes not editable on page level.

Hello,

Are there any plans to introduce the functionality that Chris Warner described into the final release of Sitefinity 4.0?

We're looking to do the following:
-Add a content pane (example: content block) at a template level
-Our client creates a new page with this template
-Sitefinity creates a new content block for editing at page level

In this case the content pane at the template level would act more as a place holder but for a specific content pane and would prevent the user from having to manually setup the panes for each individual page. Currently in SF4 a ContentPlaceHolder is editable at a page level but the content panes added at a template level are not.

Thanks,
James.

Hello James Antrobus,

You could add the controls to the template and the users will not have to add the controls to each page to set up the layout. The controls added to the master page should not be accessed from the page level and this is why we have exposed option to access the same level ContentPlaceHolder. At this stage we do not have plans to add your request out of the box, but we will consider it for the beta.

Hi Ivan,

A previous thread our company started is here in which it describes similar functionality would be coming to Sitefinity 4.0, is this no longer the case?

In your reply you say that controls added to the master page should not be accessed from the page level, what are your reasons for this? If we developed a production site with the current release of Sitefinity it would require our clients to drag on the correct content panes for every page they create. They cannot be added to the master page as you stated because then they would no longer be editable at a page level.

What do you recommend in this case? We have previouslly been pointed to a thread here to create predefined templates - this isn't ideal though as it would require additional work for each site we develop, and for each template.

I briefly covered this in my previous post but we would like to something like the following:
-Create a custom template with a content block and image
-Lock the template so it cannot be edited by our client
-Client creates a page with the custom template
-The page automatically has a content block and image pane added - no manual work is required
---These are new content panes at a page level
-Any content added to these panes is saved at a page level only - not at a template level

Is anything like this currently possible? This is the way our current CMS behaves and we would like to replicate it. If you think this requirement is wrong could you state why and how one should go about this in Sitefinity.

Many thanks,
James.

Hi James and Chris,

Sorry for the confusion. I guess Ivan Dimitrov wasn't aware, but this functionality is in our to do list and it will be available with the beta release.

Sincerely yours,
Bob
