If you have a moment, do you think you can tell me if Sitefinity can do these things in SEO?


  • XHTML Compliant - Renders in XHTML compliant mark-up out of the box
  • Canonical URLs - Able to specific a canonical URL for a single page
  • SEO Friendly URLs - Able to create and configure SEO friendly URLs and formats
  • XML Site Map - Able to dynamically and automatically generate an XML Site Map
  • Granular Site Map Priorities - Able to set XML sitemap priorities in the page admin
  • Semantic Menu - A menu system that uses semantic mark-up
  • Google Analytics Integration - Full integration of the Google Analytics script
  • Search Engine Submission - Allows you to submit the website to a variety of search engines from an admin interface
  • XHTML Compatible Controls - All controls used (menus, grids, etc.) render XHTML compliant mark-up

Hello Will Strohl,

Thank you for your interest in Sitefinity 4.0.

Let me try to briefly answer your questions.

  • XHTML Compliant - We support XHTML compliant markup.
  • Canonical URLs - we support this. By default when you create pages urls are generated based on that where in the hierarchy the page is located and on the name of the page. You can however override this and specify different url while creating the page
  • SEO Friendly URLs - By default our urls are generated in a SEO friendly format. This goes both for pages, content items and taxonomies (classifications).
  • XML Site Map - We do have a built in sitemap provider, which stores all pages in a the site map based on ordinals and page hierarchy, however we do not have a control which produces an XML file with your site map.
  • Granular Site Map Priorities - We have granular permissions for all content types in the system. This includes pages - you can set different permissions for each page, or use permission inheritance to set the same permissions for a set of pages.
  • Semantic Menu - By default our menus are rendered as lists and each node is rendered as a list item containing the link to the page and text for the node. Then we apply styling rules to change their appearance. However to answer your question more precisely I will need some further clarification on this one.
  • Google Analytics Integration - Sitefintiy 4.0 is going to ship with an Analytics module which is an integration with GA. Right now you can add GA script to your pages from the Scripts and Styles page toolbox which contains a control for inserting GA script on your page.
  • Search Engine Submission - This has to be done manually.
  • XHTML Compatible Controls - Right now in the beta some controls do not render XHTML compliant markup, however we have those on our to do list for fixing. We will fix the non comliant html for our next releases.

Thank you so much for answering those questions.  I have one final one.  Do you support HTTP 301 Redirects for pages that either moved, URL changed, or no longer exist?

Hi Will Strohl,

In Sitefinity 3.x you can achieve this by using our Advanced URL Rewriter - you can create rules for pages and make the rewrtier respond with 301 and redirect to the correct resource. This feature is not yet implemented in Sitefinity 4.0, however this feature is a must and will be implemented on a later stage.

In regards to Semantic Menus - I have verified that currently all of our navigation controls comply with standards for semantic markup.

Yes in Sitefinity you can use Advanced URL Rewriter to create page urls. It can be easily use the Url pages and tools in the SEO.
