Custom search providers

Has anyone tackled creating a custom search provider?

We are looking at the ability to index file content (pdf and Office docs) and only return search results that a logged in user's roles would allow (we are contemplating the possibility of using this as a dealer portal).

What techniques have all of you used to include this type of functionality?

We are going to have a sample about custom search index - pipe that will come with the SDK release of Sitefinity 4.1. Our plans are to have it by the end of this week.
