Cannot Log in for Remote Editing and Administration

We're trying out remote editing, adding "sitefinity" to the site url
servername:8000/sitefinity
we get the log in screen
but none of the user names work
they *do* work when we are using remote desktop into the server itself.

Is there an additional step to allow users to edit the sites and content remotely in a web browser?

I finally just deleted the site, files and IIS folder and recreated from scratch.
Then it worked.
