Sitefinity 3.7 Future Support
I'm wondering if Telerik will continue to support Sitefinity 3.7. The reason I ask is that SF4.x is a stand alone release and migrating to SF4 from 3.7 would require a third party migration tool. I am asking this because we are contemplating going back to 3.7 due to the difficulty in module implementation in 4.x.
Thanks,
Ron
A details support / phase out plan and (lengthy) timeframe would be good to know. We have a large number of sites under 3.7 and would not upgrade them until 4.x was up to scratch (although we are building some new sites in 4.1) and also would not upgrade them unless the client was willing to fund the time required to do so (including porting many bespoke custom modules). Many clients will not see the benefit of paying for that unless they were having a complete site re-design. Many never will.
Hello,
Please check the following image - http://www.sitefinity.com/Libraries/Features_Screenshots/Sitefinity_Lifecycle.sflb.ashx
it shows the lifecycle of the 3.x and 4.x versions. This is published in our FAQ: http://www.sitefinity.com/purchase/purchase-faq.aspx under Existing 3.x Customers.
With version 4.2, we will introduce Fluent API for Definitions - basically the building elements of all controls and custom modules. This API will greatly simplify the module creation.
With all due respect, given the issues with 4.0/4.1 I think the timeframe for discontinuing 3.7 forum support (appears to be Q3 2011) and then discontinuing updates (early to mid 2012) is too far to the left. If 4.x had been a winner from day 1, it would be different. My agency will be supporting websites made in 3.7 for at least the next two years, possibly longer, and while we don't expect Telerik to fully support 3.7 for that length of time, I think phasing out support from mid to late 2012 would be more appropriate.
Kind regards

Hello Sumo,
Thanks for your feedback. We will certainly take into account before shutting down the support for 3.x.
