YetAnotherForum.NET Integration

Is there a timeline on integrating YetAnotherForum.NET into Sitefinity? Gabe indicated in a blog post that he would blog about the integration, but I've not seen any follow-up on that. Is YetAnotherForum.NET still the recommended approach to integrating a discussion forum?

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

Yes, we would recommend using YAF for discussion forum, and we are indeed currently working on preparing a guide on how to properly integrate it with Sitefinity 4.x, thank you for bringing our attention to it. Please excuse us for the delay in preparing this but since the integration is not that trivial we really want to come up with a detailed and user friendly guide.

Hi Boyan Barnev,

Thought to hear how it goes with the YAF guide.
Is there date for when it might be ready?

Hello!

Is this guide still planned for the 4.3 release?

Hello James,

Yes, the task is still scheduled for the Sitefinity 4.3 release, hopefully we'll be able to complete it in time and provide you with the complete set of instructions necessary for setting up YAF integration in Sitefinity.

Hi Boyan,

With 4.3 out, will the YAF guide perhaps be included in the SDK update? (scheduled next week)

Thanks.

Hello Olav,

Currently the status of YAF integration with Sitefinity 4.x is the following: YAF can be used to add a forum to any website, including one running Sitefinity. However, it is not currently possible to integrate a forum to run inside a Sitefinity website using YAF. In order for it to function properly it must run as either a completely separate website, or a separate application (virtual directory) with its own membership and database. Once you've set that up, the easiest way to integrate the forum in Sitefinity would be to include it in the SiteMap by referencing it as an external page. It is possible to skin the forum so that it maintains the look and feel of the main site, but it must be done with static html, since you can’t reference Sitefinity elements (such as menu, galleries, etc) in the forum site.

Thanks Boyan, for a status with details.

Yes, sharing a membership provider was the whole idea.

We purchased the CT.Forums minutes after reading your post, finally giving up on the Sitefinity-YAF integration.
The CT.Forums is apparently not yet a big product. I have discussed the business-related shortcomings with the CodersTeam guys on their own forum (can't contact them elsewhere), and we have reached some kind of understanding, to get us started with the only available forums module for SF4.
(they are supposed to provide a web service for exporting forums data in the months to come, as an assurance, and they are supposed, in case development activities stop, to provide the source code to licensed customers or via Sitefinity Market)
The CodersTeam seems to be doing a good job in developing and servicing their product, and we would have made this choice quite a while ago if we had not been alarmed by the lack of source code to both Sitefinity and this add-on product, while Sitefinity during the last year had been taking unpredictable turns. (simply removing a module for indefinite time was a little shock to us)

I really appreciate your briefing, but, and I'm repeating myself - we really should have known prior to the 4.1 release in February.

While I think we are about to solve the problem of our missing forum, you answers might bring up a new and quite serious one. Use of custom membership providers should have been working from version 4.1. This might turn out to not be a probmen with YAF alone. Apparently, the use of custom membership providers is still not working properly. Right?
We have not tested this approach fully yet, but we have been considering to offer/suggest Sitefinity for use with our own vertical solutions, to a number of our customers starting from January. (Anyway, timing would definitely have to be adjusted)
Looking forward to see your comments on this issue.

Best,
Olav

Hello Olav,

Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused. Indeed, the YAF integration has been on our mind for several release sin a row, actually what made us give it up was not the fact that custom membership providers do not work (I can assure you they do, as we've had several clients who've been communicating with us in the process of successfully integrating custom membership providers in their Sitefinity projects).
The problem we've encountered was that there was no way to integrate a common membership and role provider between YAF and Sitefinity (in other words YAF using the default Sitefinity provider, so the users can be shared). Due to the above, the YAF controls did not work properly on a Sitefinity 4.x page. Once again, please excuse us for the inconvenience, from what I can say the CT.Forums module has been a successful alternative so far, and we've had satisfied clients using it.

I'll make sure to include the matter in one of our internal discussions, when planning the upcoming releases, and will let you know if there's been some further progress.

All the best,

Thanks Boyan,

Good to hear that it is possible to share Sitefinity's membership provider.
We have not fully implemented/tested the CT.Forums yet, but it looks like we will never look back to YAF again.
It is either CT.Forums or some future native Sitefinity module.

Best,
Olav
