url routing

I was wondering if anyone has used the SF URL routing with a custom control?
Here is what I'm doing: I created a custom usercontrol that has a datalist on it showing data, I dragged this control to a page within sitefinity. The data within my datalist, has an URL that I'm passing parameters via the querystring such as details.aspx?id=12, however, I want to pass the data such as details/Freshman Class, how within Sitefinity can I get that URL style working, or do I have to create a custom module to grab that URL?

I would rather not pass anything within the querystring if possible, I would like to keep the URL's clean, so for my sitefinity pages the URL's, look like students/freshman, students/sophmores, and so on, I want my details pages to have the same urls but use my custom controls to have the links on.
