Displaying more than one item in the Default News & Events Widget

I use the News and Events widget on the home page, but I want to display more than 1 item. How do I modify the default News & Events Widget to display a given number of items?

I tried creating a new widiget template but it didn't have all the same stylings (gray headings etc)
