Configure navigation widget back to root, but not root sibli

I am wondering if it is possible to configure the navigation widget in my left hand navigation to show a treeview all the way back to the root, but only for the section being viewed. For example, I have a site with 3 sections and each has subpages a couple of levels down. Ex:
Section 1 landing page
  section 1 child page
  section 1 another page
Section 2 landing page
  section 2 child page
  section 2 another page
etc...

When I am on the landing page or any subpage of section 1, I want to see this in the navigation:
Section 1 landing page
  section 1 child page
  section 1 another page

...but, what I actually see, if use "Top Level pages"  is
Section 1 landing page
  section 1 child page
  section 1 another page
Section 2 landing page

If I select "All pages under particular page" and select the section 1 landing page, then I see:
  section 1 child page
  section 1 another page

I want basically the same list you get with the "Show the selected page in navigation" option for the vertical view, but I want to maintain the hierarchy of the tree view. Is this possible? I am new to this and have not tried editing any templates yet, but am not opposed to doing so.
