Preferred method for .css and .js versioning

What's the preferred method for versioning .css and .js files that get cached on the client so that the updated file is forced to load in the user's browser?

Is there a setting or something in Sitefinity to make this easy? I'm running SF 5.1

This seems to have been addressed in SF 5.4
