News Item page

We have the News list widget on ~/news which also includes a breadcrumb and a widget that shows our social media stream. Using the default functionality of an auto-generated page for the detail/single news item, the breadcrumb works perfectly showing Home > News > News Item Title (since we have the AllowVirtualNodes set to true on the breadcrumb widget). However, we would like for the single news item page to not have the social stream widget, so I then tried creating a separate page with the news item widget and setting the list widget to use this page for the single item. This shows the news item correctly, but the breadcrumb now includes the (empty) page that has the news item widget.  How can get the detail/single news item to show on a page that has the breadcrumb Home > News > News Item but not the social stream widget.
