Why are we locally storing External provider avatars?

Everytime someone logs into the site SF downloads their google profile image and bloats up the DB and file system storing it to a hidden externalprovider album.  

Why are we doing this instead of just storing the URL and letting google serve up the image?  They even provide multiple sizes for it on the URL...
