New England PUG Spring 2010 Meeting -- Getting Started With

The New England Progress Users Group (aka NEPUG) is pleased to  announce that on April 12th we will be hosting Getting Started with  OpenEdge for .NET an all-day workshop led by Mike Fechner, Managing  Director of Consultingwerk Ltd.  Mike has been working with Progress for  over 15 years and is well known to OpenEdge Advanced GUI developers as a  very early adopter and an extremely active technology preview, beta  program participant and online community particpant.

Participants will learn how to work with OpenEdge Architect and the  Visual Designer; the basics of OO ABL as they apply to working with  .NET; how the Advanced GUI integrates with existing code (including App  Builder based applications) and how to take maximum advantage of this  exciting new technology from Progress.

We may have a limited number of PCs available for on-site  participants but you are stongly encouraged to bring your own  laptop.

We will be using a pre-built image in the Amazon Cloud.  Both on-site  and remote participants will receive directions to access and test this  image before-hand.

8:00 - 9:00    Install and Setup (For people having trouble with "The  Cloud")

9:00 - 9:15    Welcome!

9:15 - 10:15  OE GUI for  .NET Overview


This session will deliver a high level introduction into GUI for .NET as
well as discuss various strategies to start leveraging the GUI for .NET
to "pimp your app". The talk covers techniques that can be used to
enhance the usability as well as the look and feel of an existing
Progress V9 or OpenEdge 10 application using the GUi for .NET and
discuss the requirements to fully leverage the power of the .NET UI in
the OpenEdge client

10:30 -11:30    Migration From App Builder to OEA


Having difficulties getting started with OpenEdge Architect? This
practical session will demonstrate how to move an AppBuilder based
development and test configuration (based on Desktop Shortcuts, ini
files and pf files) into a workspace, projects and run/debug
configurations. The presenter will discuss when to use one or more
projects, the Shared AVM of OpenEdge Architect 10.2B and AppServer
projects.

1:00 - 2:00  Working with OE10


This session explores some of the fundamental new language features of
the ABL: Object Orientation, Structured Error Handling and how this can
be used even with existing code.


2:15 - 3:15    A Simple Sample


In this session we will start working with the Visual Designer of
OpenEdge 10.2B and explore and complete a simplified sample of a data
entry screen built using the GUI for .NET and Infragistics Controls
(OpenEdge Ultra Controls).

3:30 - 4:30    Working With Embedded Windows


In this session we will use WinKitLE (light edition) - a free toolkit
from Consultingwerk - to use GUi for .NET to "pimp your app". We will be
turning ABL menus and toolbars into their pendant from Infragistics or a
Ribbon and replace a Progress Browse widget with an UltraGrid.

If you have ever been curious about OpenEdge Architect or .NET programming and never quite found the time, or if you're planning to dive in sometime soon or even if you have previously tried one or the other and had some "issues" or you just need a refresher or a fresh perspective this workshop is for you!
