1. AppServer does a lot.. Your best bet is to get the documentation and read it. The 10.2B documentation is here - and for AppServer purposes, there is not a lot of difference (if any) between 10.2A and 10.2B
2. AppServer Administration and Developing AppServer Applications are required reading.
3. See point 1 & 2 - the docs are excellent reading material
4. Besides the fact that rearchitecting your application could be a monster job (depending on how the original application was written, of course), not much.
5. Only in licensing terms - each has it's own functionality.
