The placement of the growl messages is a little intrusive. Instead of having them display in the upper right, is it possible to change their default placement to somewhere else on the screen, like the bottom left?

Can you provide some screenshot of the growl message? It might be possible to move it via CSS and can also be fixed in the future release by adding it to the Ideas section.

The class name for that growl message is .rbs_msg_container. You can customize the CSS position add add the CSS style in the rollbase theme file. However, a better solution is to create an Idea in the Ideas sections since this will override the default CSS and might not work if a Rollbase Upgrade changes the class name of the element.
