How long will my servers take to start?

Hi

We've had a few questions around how long you should expect servers to start.  In short, it depends.  OK, more explanation.

  • Linux based servers start way quicker that Windows, that's just a fact.
  • The chosen region can affect the start up time, especially first startup. (See next point)
  • First startup  takes longer than subsequent starts. The reason being on the first startup we're installing & copying down product into the server, which takes time. The source data for the products is currently stored in the US, hence why regions other than the US can take longer as we're copying data further!
  • First start up of a Windows based server can take an hour or more
  • First start up of a Linux based server typically takes under 20 mins
  • Subsequent starts of a Windows server typically take less than 20 mins
  • Subsequent starts of a Linux server typically take 5-10 mins

All said and done, though, even at 1hr, for a first boot of a Windows Server, it's still way quicker than having to have learned all the Cloud stuff yourself, figured out what storage model to use, copying up the PSC product, installing it, etc. by orders of magnitude!
