Client Networking on a mac laptop

Posted by OctavioOlguin on 01-Jul-2015 17:51

Greetings!

I was commanded to enalbe a mac laptop on the localnetwork for the boss to access local app.

Never seen/used a mac before...

I wonder how could I enable a windows session to run client networking?  What are the concepts that I should google to get info on how could I do that?

Thanks in advance.

I appreciate it.

VMWare is your best choice (imo).  You would basically have a virtual windows machine running on his Mac and install Progress there.. just like you would on a regular windows box.

Get the right versions and it is even supported

Do your boss and the Mac a favor. Use boot camp. apple ships that with every mac. It's a set of windows drivers and a dual-boot solution that allows you to run Windows directly on the Mac.

Later you can uninstall OS-X completely from the Mac, get really productive and still look cool at Starbucks.

Indeed Mike, a Mac is way too expensive for Facebook

And a cool machine to run Windows on. Best PC hardware with a great OS :-)

Chuimonster, sorry to ruin your day with the truth!

I assumed his boss was a hardcore Mac fan and didn't want to do the dual boot thing :-)

If I was going to spend that much money (Mac prices) on a windows laptop I would certainly hope it had better specs...

Some day Progress will realize that there are an awful lot of customers
with Macs showing up for sales meetings and corporate briefings and
such. That is isn't just a whole lot of their own engineering and
support people using Macs... and that many of those customer people are
in a position to approve purchases and sign-off on licenses.

All I want is for the database and the character client to be ported to
OSX. Treat it just like any other UNIX, don't waste any resources on
GUI eye-candy.

That could be a break-out session Mike.. "Removing the Mac from your Mac". :)

Come on Tom, you know you can have that on a small docker instance... do you ever talk with Julian? :)

In fact if one want to go crazy start from docker-wine image and install client networking there, normally that should work with wine... most of  the time.

Yes, but I would prefer a native port.

And I want the iBook I bought when I was young and silly and had an iPad to work on my Android devices, but sometimes we don't get what we want! ;-)

I do not think it is just a "want". I have lost quite a bit of business because we do not run native on OSX.

You need to talk to Product Management (Rob Straight or Brian Bowman) so they can build up a business case for doing the port.  Also make an "Ideas" topic.
