Hi all,
We have an in-house Progress 8.3b system with character (CHUI) clients running
on PCs with terminal emulators, and UNIX dumb terminals. The system has evolved
over a number of years, and runs on UNIX.
The system currently supports English only - and we would like to internationalize
it. My current thoughts are:
- Upgrade to version 9
- Convert database to UNICODE
Question 1:
Am I right in thinking that although CHUI clients donÂ’t support UNICODE, the
CHUI clients should continue to operate OK so long as ‘strange’ characters
arenÂ’t used in the database? (In other words, converting an English DB to UNICODE
should cause no problems for the CHUI client?).
Question 2:
Eventually the clients will have to be changed to GUI/Web to provide richer
functions. I am thinking of upgrading parts/functions of the CHUI system to
use AppServer and GUI/Web clients function by function. This would mean the
users would access some screens using the old CHUI, and others using the new
GUI/web client with AppServer. SoÂ…
- Is this possible?
- Does anyone know of a method to integrate the old CHUI and the new GUI/web
functions into a single interface, to save users switching between 2 apps?
The goal is that over time all the functions of the system will be moved from
CHUI to GUI/web with AppServer, meaning we have achieved a piecemeal upgrade.
Thanks in advance!

If you wanted "all" this would be on www.peg.com

Yes, but totally undesirable.

There is no silver bullet. You have to do it all or nothing, you can't intermingle
UI's.
