We have been thinking about a generic way in which users can set their
own defaults when a record is added through a Dynamics folder window.
Basically, we want to store a delimited list of field-names and a
delimited list of values or keywords that is supplied to an addRow
override in datacustom.p. An example of a keyword would be 'previous',
if a user wants to default a field to the same value as the previously
added record, or others like 'company', 'today', etc. Otherwise the user
could simply enter the desired value.
Our current thinking is that the these defaults could be set for a specific
user or all users, and that the delimited lists be stored in the profile
manager, since we can control its use through use of special types, codes,
and values.
In terms of how the user interfaces with the default values, we are thinking
that a right-click on the field could override the existing cut/paste menu
and prompt for the default value or keyword, whether all users or just the
logged in user, and whether it is to be set for the session or permanently.
Before we go ahead and do this, I'd like to know if anyone has done anything
similar, or if there is any plan to incorporate such functionality in
Dynamics.
If not, we would like to get any feedback from the community about the
approach
described above in case there may be pitfalls we haven't foreseen.
