Still using old Eclipse versions

What's up with Progress that they are still reasonably behind on their plugins to Eclipse?

OE 10.2B uses Eclipse 3.4.2 (but supported on 3.5).

Last I checked, Eclipse 3.5 has been released on June 2009.

If Progress ever going to catch up? or this is just signs on OE / ABL growing old and time to move on?

To provide better cross product integration between different Eclipse based Progress tools, most of product groups at Progress Software have adpted a cross tools Eclipse platform strategy. Depending on the dependencies on other tools (like OpenEdge Architect and Sonic workbench) and their release schedules, we try to internally synchronize on the Eclipse versions so our dvelopement community has a good user experience of using multiple products in a single Eclipse environment.

So for the past few releases, OpenEdge Architect has attempted to create a balance between supporting latest Eclipse platform, synchronizing release schedules and managing integration depedencies by shipping with certain Eclipse version and also supporting newer versions of Eclipse.

  • Eclipse shipped version provides OpenEdge Architect with the guidelines as to which of Eclipse API's and capabailities we (as the OpenEdge Architect tools develpers) can leverage for OEA plug-ins and this also helps in inegration strategy
  • With additional supported versions, we try to keep up with the latest Eclipse versions so our community can benefit from the latest Eclipse features. As of OpenEdge Architect 10.2b we have also made it easier to install the supported versions by providing install enhancements.

We continue to actively invest and provide additional features to OEA. Hopefully this brief sumary provides a reasonable overview of our commitment and strategy for OpenEdge Architect and latest Eclipse platform support. Let me know if you have further questions regarding this. Thanks

Regards,

Sunil.
