Using OpenEdge Architect with HLC

Posted by Admin on 05-May-2010 03:36

Is there any chance to use OpenEdge Architect with HLC (custom built prowin32.exe)?

Neither the launch config dialog or the project properties allow to use a different executable. Is there any "hidden" trick to do so (tweaking a config file of OpenEdge Architect) etc.?

Are there any plans to make that work out of the box? Also HLC developers would like to use the new debugging functionalities inside OpenEdge Architect.

Have you tried the simple expedient of naming the newly built executable prowin32.exe?

Side question:  why use HLC at all?

No - because that would affect any installation or project.

Clients requirement.

They have integrated their own formula / marko language using HLC to allow their users to write "business rules". That code is written using HLC.

As long as OpenEdge still supports HLC, the tools should support so as well, don't you agree?

True. I meant it more as a "proof of concept" that the executable would work for the intended purpose.

Are they aware of how much simpler and more reliable it is to call a

shared library? (DLL)

Yes. But if I were in charge it wouldn't be an issue

Given that one has control over the PROPATH, isn't it a simple matter of having a separate directory with the HLC version and putting that in front of the PROPATH when appropriate and leaving it out when appropriate?

I'm inclined to agree that this sort of requirement is better solved with an external library these days.  That may not always have been true, but it seems like the right thing now.

Unfortunately no. OEA launches DLC/bin/prowin32.exe in GUI mode and DLC/bin/_progres.exe in tty mode.

But, you get to define DLC.
