Has anyone done anything with authenticated SMTP connection

I trying to see if this is doable in ABL that can run on the appserver on both UNIX and Windows. So far, the biggest obstacle is the SSL part of the authentication. For now, I'm leaning towards writing a Java based application to handle this. I'm just wondering if there is anyone that already tried to do the same thing?
