OE 12:Database maintenance capabilities via SQL,

Posted by Valeriy Bashkatov on 14-Mar-2019 12:19

Hi,

I still haven’t received OE 12 and can’t verify. Therefore, I ask here.

On this page docs.progress.com/.../Online-schema-changes.html it says that it is now possible to update the schema online using OpenEdge SQL.

"With online schema changes made in OpenEdge SQL 12.0, multiple database operations can be performed concurrently without interfering with each other. The benefit of online schema changes is that OpenEdge SQL objects do not have an exclusive lock and are accessible to other queries and operations as a result."

Is this true for the PUB schema?

Regards,
Valeriy

Valeriy,

These sql online schema change capabilities in 12.0 are only for db objects (tables, etc.) in a non-PUB schema.
Tables in the PUB schema are not eligible for these online changes currently.

Hope this helps,         ….steve pittman

Thank you Steve!

But what, then, is the point of this change?

100% of our customers use the only PUB schema to work with ABL. All of their applications are highly critical systems, and it is 100% ABL applications, that require the ability to manage a 24x7 database online. It turns out that they again will not get what they really need so much. [:O]

How many clients use OpenEdge to store database objects in a non-PUB schema? why would they do that?
