License Structure - Table Partitioning

Can anyone shed some light on how the licensing is going to work for Table Partitioning? It would be really useful for our system, but costs could be prohibitive.

I believe it will be licensed in the same way as TDE and OE Replication: as an add-on to an existing Enterprise DB license. I don't know how much per user/CPU/agent/...

Thanks Paul. If that's the case then I doubt we will ever implement it. :(

I hear you. That's going to be the case for a lot of companies. But really that means that you don't need it right? It's like heated seats in your car: nice to have in Atlanta when the temperature dips to a frosty 45F but really worth the extra $$ in Montreal and Minneapolis.

Well... there's a difference between needing something from a technical perspective, and needing something from a business perspective. We're probably right on the cusp of the justification (300+GB database). Loads of legacy data that we can't archive off, and loads of tables with natural split points too. It would make a huge difference to performance. But in terms of bums on seats' time saved it's not going to be enough IMO.

Still - much bigger fish to fry in terms of our performance gains at the moment. And the small subject of High Availability. I wonder if there's a workshop any time soon?! ;)

At Exchange the product management team discussed something that, as I
recall, they were calling "Advanced Enterprise Edition". The idea is
that all of the db components that are currently add-on costs would be
bundled.

That might be something to discuss at PUG Challenge.

If the amount of data makes any notable difference in query performance
then you are either writing bad queries or your application needs to
re-examine its index definitions. Or both.

There is a HA workshop in less than a month at the EMEA PUG Challenge in Dusseldorf.  Or if you have enough interest in your local PUG, we can figure something out with respect to expenses and have me come out to give it locally in your area.

Where are you geographically?

The ";)" was an attempt at sarcasm... I'm already signed up for the HA Workshop in Düsseldorf. :) Very much looking forward to it.

I'm still on my first coffee after listening to my twin 2-year old boys cry from 00:30 to 4:00.  The sarcasm did not register.

Paul – there are good reasons to look forward.

Like a week away from home in Düsseldorf with adults keeping you awake with dull questions and cold beverages. And for the first time ever not the early Friday morning time slot for you.

I'm with you there! Thankfully my kids are slightly older (3 and 5) and the sleepless nights are less frequent! That, and it's nearly 3pm here so plenty of coffee consumed.

I can confirm that TP is licensed as a DB add-on.  Costs are reasonable; comparable to other add-on products.  I heard rumblings about the bundle that Tom mentioned but haven't seen anything firm yet.  There will be a new price list in December so perhaps we'll see something then.

Posted by Paul Koufalis on 22-Oct-2014 09:16

@Mike: yeah I was surprised.  You told me you were going to make a special slot at 7:00 for me.  Gilles saved me from that didn't he?

Posted by gus on 22-Oct-2014 09:17

@Mike: do they have proper beer in Dusseldorf? Or will I have to go out for that?

Posted by Mike Fechner on 22-Oct-2014 09:18

No – I didn’t want to punish your potential audience for your failure from 5 years ago.

[mention:9617a07f61934bc98f6fccb3b7fabfae:e9ed411860ed4f2ba0265705b8793d05] I'd be very surprised if you don't find decent beer in Düsseldorf.

Whisky, on the other hand, might be an issue so I'm packing my own... :)

While there may be circumstances in which you observe improved performance with partitioned tables, the primary benefit of table partitioning will be in reduced disruption to normal processing caused by maintenance related operations.

@Gus: there's a description for comments like that in my head: it starts with "sh" and it ends with "disturber".

Mike promised to bring some Kölsch. The party might end up around his car trunk.

Thanks [mention:9617a07f61934bc98f6fccb3b7fabfae:e9ed411860ed4f2ba0265705b8793d05] in which case the justification just got a whole lot harder!

Posted by Mike Fechner on 22-Oct-2014 09:22

Gus – don’t ask someone coming from Cologne about beers from the forbidden city. Never :-)

Good news is, that the Kölsch beer consumption in Düsseldorf is increasing while the Alt beer ( = old beer ) is decreasing.

Worth pointing out the "Old Beer" is a description of the style of brewing, not the age of it... ;)

Questionable. At least.

Posted by James Palmer on 22-Oct-2014 09:30

I'll just stick with Hefeweizen to avoid any controversy then...

Posted by gus on 22-Oct-2014 09:30

Mike - Being quite partial to Kölsch, I am greatly relieved.
